Used and new Bialetti coffee machines

Origin & History

Alfonso Bialetti worked for about ten years in the French aluminium industry and founded his own metal workshop in Crusinallo, Piedmont, around 1919. In 1933 he launched the Moka Express with its octagonal aluminium body. The name goes back to the Yemeni city of Mocha. The device caught on mainly after the Second World War, under Alfonso's son Renato.

Positioning

Bialetti stands for the stovetop espresso maker: simple, durable and affordable. The Moka Express is a design classic and part of the MoMA collection.

Character & profile

Steam pressure pushes the water through the ground coffee. The result is a strong, intense coffee that is not espresso in the strict sense, because the pressure is too low. Grind size and heat shape the result a lot.

What to check

Gasket and filter can be replaced, so check them for wear. Aluminium does not belong in the dishwasher. The classic aluminium moka pot does not work on induction. The Venus models do, although the 2-cup size is not induction-compatible. More in the guide to buying coffee machines.

Known series

Well known are the Moka Express, Venus (stainless steel, induction-compatible), Brikka (with a pressure valve for a foamy layer), Mini Express and Fiammetta.
