Origin & History
Baratza was founded in 1999 by Kyle Anderson and Kyra Kennedy and started at Kyle's home in Bellevue, Washington. Design happens in Seattle, and production has been with a partner in Taiwan since 2001. The Breville Group acquired the company in October 2020.
Positioning
Baratza builds coffee grinders from entry level to ambitious home use, mainly for the North American and international market.
Character & profile
The range runs from the simple Encore through the Virtuoso+ to the Sette and the Vario. The Sette is designed for espresso, while the Encore and Virtuoso+ are popular for filter coffee and pour over.
What to check
Check the burrs for wear, listen for unusual motor noises and test whether the grind size adjusts smoothly and reproducibly. Clean the grinder thoroughly before selling. More in the guide to buying coffee machines.
